Are You Really Okay?

By Sue Binder, LAC, LPC

"I'm okay."

"Doing good."

"I'm fine."

How often do we hear these words and pass right by someone? Oh, we might shrug or say, "Good deal" or grunt a brief response. But how often to we stop and inquire further? Do we ever question whether that person is truly "okay?"

The next time you hear a family member, friend, co-worker or acquaintance--or a patient-- say "I'm okay" "Doing good," or other brief remarks, stop a moment and smile at them. Look them in the eye. Maybe sit down with them and talk for a few moments. Let them know you care and that you are there for them.

During this Mental Health Month, I want to encourage all of us to go a step further. Why?

Simply because there are people hurting out there. They are in emotional pain. They may be contemplating suicide. They may be taking drugs to compensate for their past trauma. They may be going through family problems. Perhaps a loved one just died or they may be suffering from medical issues that impact their ability to manage their feelings.

We do not know just how deeply someone may be suffering, if we simply accept the words, "I'm good" and we shuffle on with our lives. Taking a moment, giving a smile, a hug (when appropriate), a cup of coffee, or a few moments of our precious time, just might brighten another person's day.

It might even save a life.
