The town of Lamar, Colorado, is located in the Arkansas River Valley in the southeast corner of the state. Lamar is a small community with a rich heritage. Surrounding Lamar are prairies, farmland, and wide open spaces. Demographics Lamar has a population of 8,869 and serves as the county seat for Prowers County (population of 14,483). Economy Wheat, alfalfa and corn fields are the predominant agriculture in the area and the semi-arid climate is ideal for livestock production. Lamar is the industrial and retail center for the southeastern region of Colorado. Lamar has a strong economy and average housing costs for the state of Colorado. Education Lamar has four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. It is also the home of Lamar Community College. Local Attractions The town serves as a wonderful vacation destination with abundant fishing, boating, hiking and other recreation opportunities in the Arkansas River and John Martin Reservoir. Lamar is especially unique because of its proximity to one of the largest wind power projects in the world, the Colorado Green Wind Power Project, located just 20 miles south of Lamar. Prowers County makes a perfect setting for this project with large areas of open land shared by grazing livestock in the neighborhood.
